Meet Victoria, I Heart Salt Lake Contributor

I’m Victoria, a.k.a. obSEUSSed.  I have 3 children and love books and family friendly places, which Salt Lake is full of. I’ve lived in Salt Lake for 14 years. I came here from Wyoming to attend the U of U and plan to stay forever.

When visitors come to my house, here are my “Best Of Salt Lake” recommendations:

Our favorite local family restaurant is Cowboy Grub off of Foothill. My kids won’t get off the electric horses and I can’t get enough of their pot roast sandwich.



My favorite local fast food restaurant lately has been Mo Bettah Steaks, their Hawaiian pork and huge shaved ice treats pull me in every time I need to stop by Sam’s Club. It is much better than a Sam’s Club pizza slice any day.

I love stopping by thrift stores and vintage consignment shops like Emilie Jayne, Now and Again, Home Again and Abode.

We love checking out the parks around the valley and one of our favorites it the Veteran’s Memorial Park in West Jordan. The huge wooden fort is so unique, the kids spend hours there.



Because I’m obSEUSSed, you’ll often find me at bookstores, one of the best is Central Book Exchange on 2017 South 1100 East. I have a big credit to use from trading in my books. I also love grabbing books at D.I., Savers and Thrift Town. I’ll be sharing some of my favorite locally owned bookstores soon on IHSL.

The Lion House Pantry Restaurant

Tucked into the west side of The Lion House on South Temple in downtown is The Lion House Pantry.  They serve the same delicious food that is served to guests at The Lion House.  There is no need to wait for the next reception, banquet or event that you will be invited to at The Lion House for their delicious home-style food.  Just stop by The Lion House Pantry for lunch or dinner.

The food is served cafeteria style, with several hot menu choices each day.  They always have soups and salads too.  The menu changes daily but you can see the monthly menu online.

Whatever you do, don't bypass the desserts. There are plenty of choices and all are made fresh each day.  Or stop by the bakery counter on your way out to take home delicious pies, cakes and cookies.

Entrees range from $7-$13.  That includes a hot main course and two sides.  And Friday nights The Lion House Pantry features Prime Rib Dinner.

The Lion House Pantry also provides validated parking at Joesph Smith Memorial Building.

McPlaydate Giveaway {Utah}

McDonald’s is improving their menu options again, this time making moms and kids happy with their new Happy Meal options.  Beginning in Utah only, they now offer apple slices in every Happy Meal and fat-free chocolate milk as a beverage option. They also have cute mini fry packs to cut the portion size for kids in every meal but you can ask for 2 sides of apples if you’d prefer. Utah gets to try out these new options first, then it will roll out nationally in March.

I’m Loving It
The idea that every child will get apples with their meal is wonderful.  I also love that each meal can have both sides. I used to order fries for one child and apples for another so they could split them and have a little of each and now we won’t have to do that. I’m also happy to know the milk is fat-free (I’m not positive how they do it and it still tastes great).  Here is my 16 month old chugging it.


We miss the McDonald’s in Sugar House that was damaged by a car fire this fall. I’ve been told they are in the planning stages to re-build and plan to have an amazing updated play area. I’m glad there are still plenty of McDonald’s around Salt Lake City to visit.

With that in mind, we are giving away a McDonald’s Playdate Package good at any Utah location:

Best thing about Salt Lake/Utah:  I love Salt Lake for the diversity that you can’t find in a lot of other areas in Utah.  I realize that Salt Lake isn’t as diverse as cities in other states, but relative to other areas in Utah, it’s quite diverse.

Anything else you want to add:  We need to support our local, independent businesses now more than ever.  I’m devastated by how many of my favorite local restaurants and shops have closed recently.  My neighborhood, Sugarhouse, has always been know for it’s large selection of local, independent businesses, but lately many of those businesses have closed and been replaced by national chains.  Our local businesses need our support in this tough economy.  Buy local!
